Data MATRIX trains university students on biostatistics problem solving

Data MATRIX joint its efforts with the Saint-Petersburg State University Statistics Modeling Department to launch a 3-month workshop for students with the focus on Biostatistics Problem Solving Cases when working for the Contract Research Organizations (CROs).

Along with the historical aspects, regulatory documentation overview and other basic theory on clinical trials, the course’s syllabus covered the assignments classification, CDISC standards overview and the difference of statistics analysis application at universities, pharmaceutical companies and CROs.

The participants were divided into two groups to work on independent Statistical Analysis Plans (SAPs) development with the guidance of Data MATRIX experienced biostatisticians, Andrei Myslivets and Victoria Leusheva. The program’s goal is to equip students with the real-life problem-solving skills, help them develop their leadership qualities and communication skills and discover their strengths.

During the first stage of the course the interns were assigned with the task of compiling the required SAP sections which was followed by designing of tables, figures and listing. During the second phase of the course the students practiced at R[1] program writing for the analyzed parameters’ calculation, where they learned the importance of being comprehensive and accurate when creating an SAP. Every intern tried themselves at the various CRO biostatistics problem solving tasks and had their first introduction to the statistics and programming for CROs. Real-life problem solving has become a major differentiating point of this course.

Once the feedback from the students and their mentors is collected, the course’s syllabus will be revised, extended and incorporated into the curriculum of other leading universities in Russia.

As a result, university graduates will be able to put this advanced mathematical instrument to use when solving biostatistics probles and programming for CROs. Data MATRIX team is positive that educating young specialists is a major contribution to the clinical trials industry. This might be by far the only viable solution to the lack of qualified employees in the area of clinical trials data management in Russia. This type of education connects prospective employees and employers along with boosting young professionals’ competence level according to the market needs.
